Mandara Huts – Your First Camp on Mount Kilimanjaro

To climb Kilimanjaro, you must choose one of the seven routes. Of all the routes, Marangu is the favorite one for many reasons, including its gentle slope, huat accommodations, and accessibility for beginners. Additionally, the Marangu route is short, typically taking just 5-6 days to complete the round trip (with 6 days recommended for better acclimatization). It’s, of course, the oldest and most popular route, which is why it’s called the ‘Coca-Cola’ route. If you don’t want to book a whole climbing package, a day hike to Mandara Hut, the first camp on the Marangu route, is always the best alternative.

The Marangu Route

What are the Mandara Huts?

Mandara Huts sit at approximately 2,700 meters above sea level on Kilimanjaro’s Marangu route. It’s the reason why many people choose Marangu for their very first Kilimanjaro climb. Why is this? Because trekkers want to rest in well-prepared, permanent camps like Mandara.

The camp is used by any hikers using the Marangu route during ascent and descent and those following the Rongai route because the northern side of the mountain doesn’t have any descent route. Practically, climbers don’t spend the night at Mandara Huts during descent; they stay at Horombo Hut and then trek past Mandara on the way to Marangu Gate.

Mandara Huts Facilities

Mandara Huts (like other camps on the Marangu route) consist of A-framed, wooden huts. Each cabin can accommodate about 6-8 people per night. The camp has a capacity for about 60 climbers per night. These types of facilities help to handle large crowds of climbers that are common during high season, from June to September.

Each cabin has bunk beds and a mattress, with each bed being able to sleep about six or eight people. You’ll use these cabins for the night. There’s a separate cabin for the special mountain crew, porters, chefs, assistant guides, lead guides, etc. On top of that, Mandara Huts has a mess cabin (or dining room) and an ablution block with long-drop toilets.

The hike to Mandara Hut

So, how long does it take to reach Mandara Huts? And how is the trail? Well, hiking usually starts at the Marangu Gate (1,860 m) only after clearing customs (we’ll help you with this). You will walk the dense rainforest trail with a very small elevation gain. This hike usually takes 3-5 hours one way. Our guides advise us to take it ‘pole pole’ (slowly slowly) to avoid burnout in the next few days. But if you’re on a day hike, take it as fast as you can.

Speaking of day hikers, the route from the gate (Marangu) to the campsite, plus the drive to and from the campsite, is enough to make your day. You can also hike to the Maundi Crater, a volcanic bowl one kilometer away from Mandara Hut. Here, you’ll see a lot of plant species, including red pokers, and view different areas (including Kenya) from the crater rim.

The trail is actually flat but often damp. With some heavy downpours, the trail gets so muddy. We highly advise you to bring the right equipment to make your hike super. Gaiters, trekking poles, and hiking boots are highly recommended. By the way, porters will do the heavy lifting for you.

A complete Kilimanjaro day hike to Mandara Huts (round trip) usually takes 6-8 hours of walking, plus a 1-hour drive each way from Moshi. If you’re coming from Arusha, then the drive will take a minimum of two hours.

Wildlife and scenery

You’ll encounter a lot of wildlife species on your way up, especially on this first day. Blue monkeys, bush babies, black-and-white colobus species such as white colobus monkeys, antelopes, and a variety of birds are common sightings when you hike and during your stay at the camp. At one point, you stop to gaze at a beautiful baboon, and at another point, a stunning bird.

The lower zone is usually green (due to the damp nature of the soil), making it very attractive. Here, you can find a variety of tree species, such as impatiens, giant groundsel, juniper trees, and so on. In season, flowers bloom and decorate the trail with picturesque colors.

For avid photographers, the best pictures are shot. After a long hike from the peak, you stop at this camp to enjoy the experience. This also applies to those unlucky hikers who didn’t get to conquer the peak (although that rarely happens).

Weather and packing list

Mandara Huts lie within the rainforest zone of Mount Kilimanjaro, which is the lowest of the five forest zones. It is wet during the rainy season, from November to early December and mid-March through May. Hiking can be tough during this time, but it is possible. As we said, trekking poles, hiking boots, and gaiters are so important, and so is layered clothing.

Pros and Cons of staying at Mandara Huts

The pros of staying at Mandara Huts are that it offers well-established huts, a good mess hall, and pit latrines. This is very good for first-time climbers or anyone who prefers staying in permanent accommodations.

The main disadvantage of staying at Mandara Huts (and other Marangu route huts) is the crowds. The cabin offers dormitory-style accommodation, and you’ll share a tent with about six to eight people as opposed to more private tents.
