Why Choose Tanzania for a Honeymoon?
Well, this country gives you loads of options to spend your honeymoon on. A safari is the most preferred option among our guests. Couples can also book a beach holiday as an add-on to their safari or as an experience in itself. For that, Zanzibar is a great place to go, not to mention private islands along the mainland coast.
Tanzania is also politically stable and welcoming for everyone. The citizens, who mainly speak Kiswahili, will be proud to host you even in their traditional homes. Couples can visit local villages peacefully, but we recommend doing that with a local guide, and please dress modestly.
Best Honeymoon Destinations in Tanzania
Tanzania is huge, with lots of places to go for a romantic safari. First-timers favor the country’s famous northern circuit, which comprises the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara. A lot of actions go into this circuit, including conquering Africa’s roof, trekking the Great Migration, and so on.
Repeat visitors (or those who look beyond the ordinary) can explore untouched destinations in the south, such as Ruaha National Park and Nyerere National Park (previously Selous Game Reserve), and in the west, including Gombe, Mahale Mountains, and Katavi National Park.
Serengeti National Park
Still undisputed for its raw wilderness and constant movements, the Serengeti is a great place for a wildlife-loving couple. From the scenes of large, maned lions guarding their territories to the thundering hooves of wildebeest, zebras, and their gazelle counterparts in their annual migration.
If you are dying to see the Great Migration live, Serengeti delivers. Over 2 million ungulates, wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle, are in a never-ending circular movement in a relentless quest for greener grazing grounds and water. There are plenty of add-ons, such as ticking off the Big Five from your bucket list, soaring over the savanna in a colored balloon, private bush dinners, and walking slowly.
Serengeti has loads of lodges and camps. Our favorites include Namiri Plains, Four Seasons Serengeti, Dunia Camp, Sayari Camp, Grumeti River Lodge, Elewana Serengeti Explorer, and Siringit Camp. Staying in a private concession adds more value to your safari. You enjoy off-road driving, night safaris, and walking safaris, and for that, we recommend Singita Sasakwa Lodge, Klein’s Camp, and Mwiba Lodge.

Ngorongoro Crater
Few places compare to the magnificence of the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest unbroken caldera. According to geologists, this crater was formed about 2 million years ago after an internal collapse of the Ngorongoro Mountains, forming a fertile volcanic bowl, which hosts over 25,000 large animals.
Honeymooners enjoy uninterrupted crater views from the rim. Couples can enjoy stunning views of big games, including the Big Five. In addition to that, you can enjoy relaxing bush walks on the crater rim. We also advise you to try a bush meal in this location to elevate your experience. A Maasai village visit welcomes you to the locals who aren’t afraid of a lion’s roar.
Regarding places to stay, you can choose either luxury lodges on the crater rim or stay in Karatu. Our favorite camps on the rim include Lemala Ngorongoro, Kirurumu Ngorongoro, Crater Lodge, and Entamanu Camp. Our great picks in the highlands include The Manor at Ngorongoro, Lion’s Paw, Plantation Lodge, Gibbs Farm, and The Highlands.
Ruaha National Park
We’ve so far named the two famous wildlife sanctuaries located in the north. Ruaha is also awe-inspiring when it comes to wildlife viewing. And the best part is that Ruaha usually gets a fraction of visitors even during the peak season. That gives you an edge, first, to view wildlife without disturbance, and second, to see the value of your money.
What can you see here? Ruaha is home to large prides of lions, majestic baobabs guarding the woodlands, and Tanzania’s largest elephant population. This park is quite big, the second-biggest park after Nyerere, so there’s much to explore, including the Great Ruaha River.
Lodges and camps are small and more intimate compared to northern parks. Our favorite camps include Jabali Ridge, Kokoko Camp, Ikuka Camp, Kigelia Ruaha, Usangu Expedition Camp, Kichaka Camp, and Jongomero Camp.

Nyerere National Park
Nyerere (formerly Selous) sits in the remote south-central region of Tanzania, a 45-minute flight from Dar es Salaam. It is the country’s and Africa’s largest park so far, and it bears the name of Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the first president of the United Republic of Tanzania.
The park offers an unparalleled safari experience to visitors, especially couples, because it offers a variety of activities, something you won’t experience in the north. Nyerere hosts many species of big game, but the most interesting part is that it hosts a large population of wild dogs (also called painted dogs or wolves).
As we mentioned, there are a lot of things to do here. You can view wildlife on a game drive, walk with a guide and ranger, or fly over the forests in a balloon. A boat ride on the Rufiji River is also a great way to spend your evening. You can also try fly camping. This has nothing to do with flying. You sleep in a simple, mosquito-netted flysheet in the bush.
There are so many great camps and lodges for staying. But if you are interested in fly camping, then make sure your camp offers it. Our favorites include Sand Rivers, Roho ya Selous, Beho Beho, and Siwandu Camp.
What to do on a honeymoon safari?
There are plenty of activities to do on your honeymoon safari. We highlight a few of them below.
- Bush dinners: The lodge prepares a quiet setting right before sunset. You decide the dishes. Try this in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Ruaha, Nyerere, or Tarangire.
- Private dining experience: Most camps offer dinners for couples in a private dining room. Here, you speak love, feed each other, and share your experience of the day.
- Sunrise balloon rides: Before sunrise, you try something extraordinary, soaring above the African savanna. In the Serengeti, for instance, this ride allows you to explore large herds of migrating animals.
- Bush breakfasts: Sometimes you enjoy a buffet breakfast in the bush. Accompanied by morning sunlight, this meal marks the very beginning of a good day in the jungle.
- Guided walks and game drives. A slow-paced drive or a guided walk are great ways to experience the African wilderness.
The bottom line
After the safari part of your honeymoon, you can try a beach holiday if you still have time left and a budget. And we can handle it. Our experts are here to help. Email us at info@exploreafricansafaris.com.
