Trekking the Great Migration in Tanzania

The Great Migration is the largest migration of mammals ever. It is one of the Seven Wonders of Africa. This endless cycle of migration of wildebeests along with zebras and gazelles commences between April and May and stops in December. The herd migrates from southern Serengeti to the eastern part in between June and July. It then heads to the Western Corridor and then crosses the Grumeti River then herding northwards where it crosses the mighty Mara River into the Kenyan reserve, Mara National Reserve. The herd then returns to Serengeti straight to the southern part when the rainy season begins. About 500,000 calves are born between January and February. When the pasture and water become scarce the herd moves to the eastern side and the cycle repeats itself.

If you are interested in trekking this natural event, you may book a special safari to witness unforgettable events like the crossings of the Grumeti River and the Mara River crossings.

Wildlife viewing

Serengeti is home to a diverse of wild animal species including the largest concentration of carnivores, or the big cats (lions, leopards, and cheetahs), all the Big Five animals, and other wild animals. On a game drive, you can witness the “King of the Jungle” resting in the short grasslands of the Serengeti plains.

A drive through the Moru Kopjes will give excellent views of the world’s fastest land animal, the cheetah hiding in the rocks or using its thrilling hunting techniques to secure a meal. Huge herds of wildebeests, buffalos, zebras, gazelles, and antelope species are always encountered in the savanna plains of the Serengeti.

Bird-watching

Serengeti is home to over 500 bird species, some of which are endemic species. Make sure you carry a pair of binoculars for a sensational vision. For the best birdwatching experience, one must starting the birdwatching Safari early in the morning. This is because the best time to find nesting birds in the nests is early morning. This trip is usually slow and quiet, in order to avoid scaring the birds. Serengeti National Park is home to five endemic bird species including Kori bustard, Secretary bird, Fischer’s lovebird, and Rufous-tailed weaver. Birdwatching is rewarding in the breeding season which commences from November to April when the migratory species have settled for nesting.
