Rwanda is home to the Volcanoes National Park, a fascinating destination where you hike through the Virunga’s volcanoes as well as tracking the mountain gorillas. This amazing park is home to a chain of volcanoes, the Virungas, which stretch to the DRC’s Virunga National Park.
The Virunga Massif is spectacular when hiked, and five among the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains range can be accessed from Rwanda. They include Mount Karisimbi which is the highest peak at 4507 meters above sea level. This volcano can be reached on a two-day hike, and the hike is filled with awe-inspiring views of bamboo forests. This mountain is sometimes covered with snows. Climbers dream of experiencing a sunrise on this snow-capped summit.
Another fantastic volcano in the Virunga Massif is Mount Bisoke which is situated at 3711 meters above sea level. Unlike Karisimbi which is covered with snows, Bisoke is covered with fog. Hikers aim at reaching the stunning Crater Lake found on the summit.
Other superb volcanic peaks of the Virunga Mountains range include Mount Muhubura (4127m) and Mount Gahinga (3474m). They offer a challenging hike for both experienced and less experienced hikers.
Volcanoes National Park offers a lifetime experience with our closer cousins, the rare mountain gorillas. It is home to a thousand mountain gorillas in the Virunga Massif. To make gorilla tracking easy, 12 families of gorillas have been habituated. They include Susa, Igisha, Karisimbi, Amahoro, Sabyinyo, Bwenge, Agashya, Kwitonda, Umubuano, Hirwa, Muhoza and Ugyenda. You are allowed to track just one gorilla group per day. You will hike through the rich green rainforest that cover the volcanos for about 30 minutes before you encounter the gorilla group. You have one hour to stare at these amazing creatures. The cost for a one hour gorilla tracking permit in Volcanoes National Park is $1500 per person per day. Children below 15 years old are not permitted to track the gorillas.
Volcanoes National Park also has rich wildlife consisting of golden monkeys, and 200 species of birds.
Akagera National Park is another reason you should visit Rwanda. It is the second most sought national park after Volcanoes. It is the only place in Rwanda where you can see all the Big Five that is lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and the black rhino. The landscape of this national park is awesome as it comprises of low-lying plains of savannah, wetlands, woodlands, and several lakes. Akagera is home to diverse wildlife including buffalos, elephants, hippos, giraffes, baboons, crocodiles, monkeys, and antelopes. Akagera is also a perfect birding site for those interested in bird-watching activity. It is home to over 491 bird species, most of which are colorful and even more attractive.
Nyungwe National Park is another reason to why you should visit Rwanda. This splendid park hosts the oldest montane forest, which harbors the chimpanzees and other primates such as L’Hoest’s monkeys. Primate tracking is an arguably sensational thing to be done in Nyungwe. Botanists can embrace their visit with 1068 plant species, 140 of which are orchids. Nyungwe is also a birders’ paradise as it is home to over 322 bird species including 29 Albertine Rift endemics. The wildlife of Nyungwe is another wonderful thing to be viewed in Nyungwe. They include mongoose, leopard, clawless otter, and serval cat to name just a few.
Gishwati Mukura National Park is authentic when it comes to viewing the chimps. Gishwati Mukura National Park was established in 2015 when two forests, Gishwati and Mukura were joined together to make this 34-square-kilometers park. It is endowed with the stunning vegetation made of 60 species of trees, which hosts about 232 bird species as well as blue monkeys and golden monkeys.
